Takuma Sato (born 28 January 1977) is a Japanese racing driver. He tried to win the 2012 Indy 500 off Dario Franchitti but eventually he spun into the wall. He is best known for upsetting Hélio Castroneves to deny Castroneves his fourth Indy 500 win, at the 2017 Indianapolis 500. Sato became the winner of the 2020 Indianapolis 500 due to a late caution from Spencer Pigot. He currently drives the no.30 car for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, after moving from Andretti Autosport.

Career

2013

Takuma Sato won his first IndyCar race at the 2013 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. He is also the first Japanese IndyCar driver to win an IndyCar race.

2017: Indy 500 win

Sato finished a respectable fifth at the 2017 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, earning Sato and Apolo Anton Ohno a seeding in the 2017 Math Open at Indian Wells. At the Math Open, Sato was beaten by qualifier Tyranitar in the second round, 6-4, 6-1.

Sato was expected by many to be seeded in the 25-32 range, however due to his Indy 500 win, he was even a top 8 seed for the first third of the season. He managed to keep this top 16 seeding for the rest of the year. Takuma Sato's Celebrity Family Feud included a mixed results series, with Sato making the semifinals in Eva Longoria vs. George Lopez and Yvette Nicole Brown vs. Ashley Graham, his best result since winning the Indy 500.

Sato ended 8th in the final standings, the first Asian-born to finish top 8 in the final standings since Pee Saderd finished 5th in the standings after Fontana on his 41st birthday in 2013. He withdrew before his match against teammate Pee Saderd in Faith Evans vs. Ross Mathews and USA Gymnastics vs. USA Swimming.

2018

Takuma Sato switched teams from Andretti to Rahal, where he was in 2012.

Sato would win the 2018 Grand Prix of Portland, in Portland's race return.

2020

Sato attempted to participate at the 2020 Genesys 300, but he crashed the car heavily into the wall, causing the qualifying session to be delayed. Because Sato's pit crew did not repair the no.30 in time for the race, Sato did not start.
