Petra Kvitová (born 8 March 1990) is a Czech tennis player. She is known for winning two Grand Slams, both at the Wimbledon Championships, in her breakthrough 2011 season and 2014.

Kvitova has made at least the quarterfinals at all four of the Grand Slams. Petra Kvitova defeated Madison Keys for the Olympic bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil despite losing in the semifinals to eventual shock gold medalist Monica Puig.

Early life

Petra Kvitova was born on March 8, 1990 in Bilovec, Czechoslovakia, a small city.

Career

2010: First Grand Slam semifinal

Kvitova started 2010 inside the top 80 in the world rankings. She progressed to her first ever Grand Slam semifinal at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships, ranked lower than 50th in the world. Her dream run was stopped by the eventual champion Serena Williams.

2011: Breakthrough and top 2

She started the season outside the top 30. Her breakthrough 2011 season includes multiple WTA titles and her first Grand Slam title at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships, defeating Maria Sharapova, the winner here in 2004.

2016: Out of top ten

Kvitova's year from January until Wuhan was bad, as she had mainly bad results due to her not making any finals between that time. She turned around her season at the Asian Swing, winning Wuhan and defeating Dominika Cibulková, who would later win the 2016 WTA Finals over Angelique Kerber.

Kvitova withdrew from the 2016 Swiss Open as her brace on her right leg would not be allowed for the Swiss Open in time. Instead she would focus on watching matches involving other WTA players. During the tournament she suffered from a knife attack in the Czech Republic and would miss at least the majority of the first half of the 2017 season until Wimbledon.

2018: Resurgence

She started her year poorly, losing to Andrea Petkovic in the first round of the 2018 Australian Open.

Kvitova made a top five return to the rankings. She became the country's top player again.
