Sawa was announced as a contestant on season 6 on July 27, 2014, two years after the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom. Originally selected on season 1 after winning the silver medal at the 2012 Olympics, she would have to wait until the Japanese team qualifies themselves to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. She has not yet made an official retirement.

She has been on Japan's squad for six World Cups (1995, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015), making her one of the most appeared players.

Sawa was fired by Trump before the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, on the opening week of the 2015 IndyCar Series season at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
