Chiyono Hasegawa (born November 20, 1896 - died December 2, 2011) was a Japanese supercentenarian.[1] Aged 115 years 12 days at the time of her death, she was the oldest verified person in Japan since the death of Kama Chinen on 2 May 2010, and the oldest verified person in Asia. She was the 2nd oldest verified living person in the world behind American woman Besse Cooper. Hasegawa remains one of the 30 oldest undisputed people ever. She was the 26th verified and undisputed person to reach age 115, and only the second undisputed Japanese and Asian person to reach this age. She was the oldest person to die in 2011. She is also the first person aged 115 or more at the time of her death not to get the World's Oldest Person title since 2007.

In September 2008 on Senior Citizen's Day, Chiyono Hasegawa, then 111, and her 61-year-old grandson were visited by Governor Furukawa of Saga Prefecture.[2][3]

On 2 May 2010, the day she became the oldest verified living Japanese person, Hasegawa attended a ceremony held at her nursing home which announced her new record.[4]

  • On 2 May 2010, Kama Chinen died, Chiyono Hasegawa, aged 113 years 163 days, became the oldest verified living Japanese person.
  • On 21 August 2010, Chiyono Hasegawa, aged 113 years 273 days, moved into the list of the 100 longest-lived people ever.
  • On 5 March 2011, Chiyono Hasegawa, aged 114 years 105 days, moved into the list of the 10 longest-lived Japanese people ever.
  • On 21 June 2011, Maria Gomes Valentim died, Chiyono Hasegawa, aged 114 years 213 days, became the 2nd oldest verified living person in the world, surpassed by only Besse Cooper.
  • On 29 October 2011, Chiyono Hasegawa, aged 114 years 343 days, became one of the 30 oldest people ever.
  • On 13 November 2011, Chiyono Hasegawa, aged 114 years 358 days, surpassed Kama Chinen to become the 2nd oldest Japanese person ever.
  • On 20 November 2011, Chiyono Hasegawa became the 26th person to reach the age of 115 and the 2nd Japanese person ever to do so.
  • On 2 December 2011, Chiyono Hasegawa died of natural causes, aged 115 years 12 days. She was the first verified Japanese person and woman ever to die at age 115. Jiroemon Kimura becomes the country's oldest living person while Kimura is not a woman. Koto Okubo becomes Japan's oldest woman and Okubo is not a man.
