The 1974 FIFA World Cup was the tenth FIFA World Cup. It was hosted by West Germany from June 13 to July 7.

The defending champion was Brazil. They made it to the second round but lost 2-0 to the eventual finalists Netherlands; they lost to them at the 2014 FIFA World Cup at home.

Hosts West Germany won the title, defeating the Netherlands 2-1 without extra time in the final.

Qualified teams

Four teams qualified for the first time, Zaire, Haiti, East Germany and Australia. This was also the first World Cup with a qualified team from Oceania. The Aussies would not qualify until the 2006 FIFA World Cup, also hosted by Germany. To date, this was the only World Cup for East Germany (it would be Germany from 1994), DR Congo (formerly Zaire) and Haiti. Netherlands and Poland returned to the World Cup for the first time since 1938.

Russia (as the successor of the USSR) failed to qualify for the first time since not entering the World Cup qualifying in 1954. One of football's more successful teams, SpainEngland and France also failed to qualify.
